HIRDA was founded by Somali diaspora in the Netherlands, and our roots in this global community remain central to our identity. The Somali diaspora represents both a lifeline and a driving force for development. In 2017, HIRDA worked to mobilize this potential by creating platforms for dialogue, lobbying for peace and state-building, and connecting skills and resources with needs on the ground.
A highlight of 2017 was the Diaspora Engagement Conference in the Netherlands, organized in preparation for the Somalia London Conference. With contributions from high-level figures such as Somalia’s EU Ambassador and former Prime Minister, the event highlighted the critical role of diaspora in peacebuilding, governance, and development. Participants discussed the challenges of mobilizing resources effectively and the need for a clear government strategy on diaspora affairs.
HIRDA also represented the Somali diaspora at the London Conference itself, joining heads of state, international organizations, and other stakeholders. Our involvement emphasized the importance of diaspora contributions—not only in remittances but in knowledge, skills, and advocacy. The Somali government itself recognized that without diaspora support, the national economy would have collapsed.
Beyond high-level conferences, HIRDA organized grassroots diaspora dialogues in the Netherlands. These meetings allowed young people, professionals, and activists to engage in discussions on integration, education, and their role in rebuilding Somalia. Sports tournaments and cultural events in Europe also served as avenues for diaspora youth to connect with their heritage while fostering social inclusion in their host societies.
HIRDA’s Achievers Award further showcased the contributions of Somali diaspora individuals excelling in business, media, art, and activism. By highlighting these success stories, we reinforced the message that the diaspora is not only a source of financial support but also of inspiration and leadership.
Diaspora engagement is not an add-on to HIRDA’s work—it is embedded in our DNA. By creating bridges between communities abroad and needs at home, we ensure that the knowledge and energy of Somalis worldwide contribute to lasting peace and development in Somalia.
