In 2017, Somalia faced one of its worst droughts in decades, leaving millions in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. HIRDA mobilized rapidly, issuing appeals through diaspora networks and launching relief operations across multiple regions. Our efforts combined food distribution, emergency water supplies, and targeted support for displaced families.
Working with partners like Human Concern International (HCI), HIRDA distributed food to thousands of households in regions such as Abudwak, Baidoa, Beledweyn, Bardera, and Galkayo. Special projects provided Iftar meals during Ramadan and Udhia meat during Eid al-Adha, reaching families living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. These initiatives supported not just physical survival but also cultural and spiritual well-being.
Beyond distribution, HIRDA set up emergency teams in Somalia to coordinate response activities, ensuring that relief reached affected areas quickly and efficiently. By leveraging diaspora networks, we mobilized resources faster than many larger international actors.
Emergency relief is not only about saving lives in the short term. For HIRDA, it is also about recovery. We integrate relief with long-term programs in education, health, and livelihoods, helping families rebuild after disaster. By combining immediate action with sustainable support, we ensure that communities can recover with dignity and resilience.
