Massive floods in Hiiran region of Somalia

Beledweyn is Under water

Due to  the heavy rain of in this week and increased the level of Shabele river was the variuous of cities of Hiiran region heavy flooded. Those cities are in crisis and  thuisends of vulnerable people has been effected and displaced.  It was shocking and  horible moment  for the people of those cities specialy people in Beledweyn.The government has confirmed that around 70,000 people have been displaced so far, with teams on the ground stressing that the number is increasing day-by-day. Allmost 11 people were caried away by the flood and not found yet. 10  people who were in rescue boot have passede away. They include officials in the region, diasporas and youth volunteers.

People In Beledweyn are desperate and in need. There no sufficient food, safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation facilities, emergency education and  temporary shelter. The emergency situation is further compounded for flood affected people with vulnerabilities. There is a pressing necessity to provide immediate assistance to minimize loss of life and to ensure that the needs of the most vulnerable are covered.

There is threat  now of cholera and other diseases due to lack of clean water in many areas. Outbreaks of diarrhea and some cases of measles are striking down people, mainly children, elders, disable and pragnant women are already weakened by hunger. 

Multi agency emergency committee was formed by the office of the Prime Minister, Hassan Ali Kheyre to organize relief efforts to help hundreds of families affected by the recurring calamity. Chaired by the Minister for humanitarian affairs and emergency services, Hamza Saed Hamza the team held meeting with various international partners on coordination of rescue efforts. President, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo also directed all government agencies to take part in the rescue operations.

Diaspora Groups in different parts of the world are organizing themself and trying to be part of the emergency response.
